The most dreaded number in blackjack is 16. It puts the player in a difficult situation—should they hit again? Or should they just stay? It’s a difficult call, but here are some strategies to help you decide what to do. First of all, remember that the chances of busting if you hit again with a 16 total on the table are high. Most players stand once they get there because they are afraid of an immediate bust. Others choose the surrender if available because they prefer to lose half a bet than to lose it all. If the 16 is a pair of 8’s the majority of players don’t want to split when the dealer’s up-card is a 9, 10, or Ace since there is a possibility to lose 2 bets in place of one. Also there is the 16 which is made up with an Ace that is a soft 16. So what is the best thing to do if you get a 16?

Well first of all, let’s look at the hard 16 hand. A hard 16 hand is one without an Ace or with the Ace as a one-value. The basic blackjack strategy for hard 16 advises the player to stand if the dealer’s face up card is small between 2 and 6 and hit if the dealer’s card is 7, 8, 9, 10, or Ace. The strategy does not guarantee you to win every time but in the long run you will lose less. For example, you have a hard 16 in the form of a 10-6 and the dealer has a face-up 7. If you hit you’ll lose 70% of the time on average and win 30%. If you stand you’ll lose 74% and win 26% on average.

When it comes to gambling, it all comes down to percentages. You can’t predict what is coming, but you can follow the general percentage calculations to not lose as much.
